How Accurate Are the Calculations?
Our results are estimates based on published average stride lengths organized by height and gender. These averages come from biomechanics research and provide a more personalized result than a flat "2,000 steps equals one mile" rule. That said, they cannot account for everything that affects real-world stride length, including:
- Walking speed and gait style
- Terrain type (uphill, downhill, uneven ground)
- Footwear
- Age and physical condition
- Specific injuries or musculoskeletal differences
- Whether you are walking, jogging, or running
For precise distance measurement, a GPS-enabled device is always going to be more accurate than any step-based estimate. Our tool gives you a much better approximation than a generic average, but it is still an approximation.
Exercise and Physical Activity
Before you start a new physical activity program, including any kind of structured walking routine, please check with your doctor or a qualified health professional, especially if any of the following apply to you:
- You have or suspect you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, diabetes, or another chronic illness
- You experience chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath during physical activity
- You have a joint condition, chronic pain, or a recent injury
- You are pregnant or recently postpartum
- You are over 65 or have been largely inactive for more than three months
